Chapter 9

"Oh my goodness, what a beautiful kitchen. Look at the work space," Liz gushed, as she eyed the work tables. Esperanza took a deep breath.

"Where is the cook?" she wondered.

"She quit," Jill reluctantly admitted. "Liz volunteered to help us for the day." Jill's exhausted expression caused Liz' heart to squeeze. She was absolutely disgusted by the islanders who turned a blind eye to the orphanage.

"Let's get started then," Essie said. Tessa sighed.

"I don't cook. Is there any cleaning that needs to get done?" she hopefully asked.

"Oh, the laundry for the younger kids needs to get done," Jill excitedly said.

"Lead the way," Tessa said, before following Jill out of the room. Essie pulled one of the refrigerators open and retrieved two gallons of milk.

"I think we should do a continental breakfast. Can you make muffins?" Esperanza wanted to know. Liz nodded as an idea popped into her head.

"I have a better idea. Why don't you work on the muffins, while I make egg bake," Liz said.

"What is egg bake?" Esperanza asked, her puzzled expression making Liz chuckle.

"It takes a day to make. Jill, can serve it for breakfast tomorrow." Liz got to work preparing four casserole dishes full of egg bake, wrapped the dishes in saran wrap, and placed them in the fridge to sit for the next day. Then she helped Essie set the buffet table. They placed a couple of containers of cereal onto the table along with fruit salad, freshly baked muffins, and donut holes. Then, Liz wheeled a mini fridge that was well stocked with milk into the dining room. Liz had just finished plugging in the fridge when orphans began filing in. Liz eyed the children, trying to determine which kid she could possibly take home. Her husband had said that she could adopt one, right? The first child, a beautiful girl who appeared to be thirteen, ushered two small children to the buffet table.

"Good morning," Liz greeted. "I’m Liz! I'm helping out until a new chef can be hired. This is my sister-in-law, Esperanza." The girl nodded and gave the women a soft smile.

"I remember you from yesterday. You brought that extra casserole. I'm Kiley and these are Mike and Tristan," she said, introducing Liz to two children who couldn't be more than five.

"Hi guys. Mike, Triston, would you both like some cereal?" Liz wanted to know. Both children smiled up at her.

"Muffin," Mike said, his blue eyes lighting up with excitement. Essie grabbed a plate and placed a muffin on it. Triston requested cereal, so Liz filled a bowl for him, and the two women led the kids to a table. Kailey brought them orange juice before snatching up two more children who had been waiting outside. Two teenagers entered, each of them escorting three children. Since these boys were a bit older than Kailey, Liz allowed them to feed the kids. She walked over to Esperanza, her heart in her throat.

"I can't believe Jill, and her brothers, run this place by herself," she told her friend, who had just refilled the try of muffins.
